What to watch for on the Škoda Fabia

CarnadoCarnado team

The Fabia is often a first car, a family's second car or a cheap town car. There are many used ones on the market, from twenty-year-old first-generation cars to almost new fourth-generation ones. The difference between a good and a bad one is mostly the engine and how the previous owner looked after the car. Below is a general overview of places worth looking at. It is not fault statistics, just orientation. Always go through a specific car with the pre-purchase checklist.

Generations. Fabia I (1999–2007), Fabia II (2007–2014), Fabia III (2014–2021) and Fabia IV (from 2021). Most offers are the second and third generations.

Three-cylinder 1.2 HTP (Fabia I and II). The cheapest and most common engine in older Fabias. On some of these engines there are timing chain and valve problems, and the engine also tends to be noisier and to vibrate at idle. Listen to a cold start (rattling at the start is a warning), ask whether the chain has been replaced and see whether the engine runs smoothly.

1.2 TSI (Fabia II from 2010). An economical turbocharged engine, but on some older chain-driven cars the chain stretches, as with the same engine in the Octavia. The newer 1.2 TSI in the Fabia III has a belt and a different design.

1.4 MPI and 1.6. Simple naturally aspirated engines without a turbo. They are considered undemanding. At high mileages oil consumption can rise, so ask how much the engine uses.

Diesels. The 1.9 TDI and SDI in the Fabia I are today mostly a question of age and how far the car has gone. The three-cylinder 1.4 TDI tends to be noisier and some people dislike its vibration. The common-rail 1.6 TDI in the Fabia II and the 1.4 TDI in the Fabia III have a particulate filter, which doesn't like short town trips. If the car spent its whole life in town, ask about the DPF and look at the invoices.

Fabia III and IV. The 1.0 MPI (without a turbo) and 1.0 TSI engines are the most common today. They have a timing belt, so watch the interval from the service plan. Some versions have a seven-speed DSG with dry clutches. On some cars it shows judder when pulling away and creeping slowly, so try it on the test drive.

Body. Older Fabias (mainly the first generation) tend to have rust by now, typically on the wheel arches, sills, lower door edges and the boot lid. Look under the car too. On an estate check that the boot doesn't leak (damp carpet, smell).

Interior and electronics. Cheaper versions have an interior of hard plastics that scuff easily, but the wear of the driver's seat still says something about mileage. Try the electric windows, central locking and air conditioning. On older cars the air conditioning often doesn't cool because of a refrigerant leak.

Suspension. Fabias often drive around town, over kerbs and speed bumps. On the test drive listen for knocking in the axles and check whether the car pulls to one side under braking.

Price. There are many Fabias on offer, so it pays to compare. The current offer and prices are shown on the page Used Škoda Fabia, and you find the price development in Price trends.
